I’m looking at getting a newer 4×4 truck and want to install hydraulics or airbags so i can raise/lower it as i please. Is this even possible (while keeping the 4×4 capability)? If so, how would one go about getting it done?

i have personally bagged a 03 chevrolet 4×4 and it is expensive to do it correctly and still keep the 4 wheel drive working correctly. you will need so much custom work, and if you cannot do it yourself and own a machine shop, then i would highly reccommend not trying it. i paid for parts and materials only (not counting my 200hrs work time or the use of my friends full machine shop and equipment) and i came up with a figure of 4,880 dollars in parts, steel, blanks, bearings, and bag equipment alone. Granted i can lay frame over 24 inchers and then raise her to 19 inches of ground clearance between the frame and the road, but it took weeks of personal time and thousands of dollars. independent front suspension systems require so much work with extending cv axles and internal carrier shafts for the cv axles that it eats up all your money and if its not done correctly then your front end will fly apart on the interstate in 3 months. all in all, i would reccomend bagging a 2 wheel drive and just getting an old 4×4 to lift. hope this helps. i would tell you more about how i did mine but i would need about 8 hours of free time to type and 50 pages of pictures and diagrams.

I only have around 1,000 or less to work with and I want a 4×4. Is it best to buy something fullsize like a bronco or fullsize blazer? Or is it better to buy something like a 4×4 pickup? What should I stay away from? Help.

You will not find much under a grand that has 4 wheel drive. The reason is simple- if it runs, it’s road worthy, and has working 4 wheel drive, the absolute base price is about $1200. You will find exceptions, of course, but that’s the way it is in general. Keep looking on Craigslist, look under cars+trucks, set the price at a max of $1000, and see what comes up. That’s the easiest way to do it.

I have a 2002 used Ford Explorer. I bought it about a year ago. It has a 4×4 button on it and the light goes on. How can I know for sure that it works, apart from going and trying it out in the snow! We want to drive up to Oregon and need to know just in case there is snow in the pass.

jack up the front and rear tires. start it. put it in 4wd. Put it in gear. If the front and rear are spinning, it is working

Pull into a dirt lot. Put it in 4wd. Have a friend stand outside and watch the front tires as you floor it. If the front tires spin (not just roll forward) in the dirt, 4wd is working.

How can you tell if a pickup truck is 4×4 or 4×2 by just looking at it?

Thanks.

look under it, if it has a front differential its 4×4, some will be straight axle like the rear axle but some might have IFS (Independent Front Suspension), you’ll still see a front differential but you’ll see a half shaft on each side going from the differential to each spindle, also of course will see a front drive shaft from the differential to the transfer case, the transfer case will be right behind the transmission

also the front end will be lifted a little more than a 2wd version of the same truck, rear will be the same but the front will be a little higher on a 4×4

I want the absolute cheapest 4×4 truck I can get. I want it to be absolute base, the only upgrade being four wheel drive. I am looking at the Toyota Tacoma, which is about 20K. Anything cheaper.

Also, anybody know anything about the Mahindra?

<<<<2009 Toyota Tacoma $19,130>>>>

2009 Chevrolet Colorado $20,210

2009 GMC Canyon $20,210

2009 Ford Ranger $21,810

2009 Mazda B-Series Truck $22,150

Its blue, 4×4, loaded with a new trans and transfer case. Only problem is that the motor is blown. 160,000 miles. Has tow package and everything bodies in good shape. What should i ask for it?

$500

I will be flying into Perth and spending a week in Western Australia. I would like to surf as much as possible and visit many natural sites in the area’s National Parks. Is it necessary to rent a 4×4 or will I be OK with a small automobile?

Are you really serious about surfing? If you are I would definitely recommend getting a 4×4 as a lot of the great surf spots are almost hidden and you have to drive on the sand dunes to get to them. There are some great places accessible by roads but I would say get a 4×4 and have a bit of adventure whilst you are here as well, it will definitely open up a lot of opportunities especially as you can go off roading while you are not surfing and you can camp out and things like that, it will also make the driving more comfortable as you will have more room for your board and luggage.

I want to be able to get up out of a creek that is at about a 70 degree angle which is curved and is about 4 feet high. My friend can do it on their Honda utility atv, but not on my 2007 Kawasaki 610 4×4 Mule. Please help!

Ask your friend what he did..
